Landmark timber deal for Taylors

Denholme-based C R Taylor Timber Ltd has just completed a landmark order at a landmark location after supplying timber to a Nuttall Construction development at Wigan Pier!

The contract, worth approximately £300,000, is the biggest to date for the 46-year-old firm and covered the supply of 21,000 metres of iLevel™ Trus Joist engineered timber products for a massive new six storey timber framed apartment block next to the venue made famous by the writings of George Orwell.

C R Taylor Executive Director Paul Amphlett explained: "This was our biggest ever job and has been fulfilled over a six month period since May.

"We work with many housebuilders and construction firms across the UK but this was certainly one of the most evocative locations sited next to the Leeds-Liverpool canal and famous Wigan Pier.

"This has been our best year to date with the initiation or continuation of contracts with some of the UK’s major housebuilders. We are predicting record levels of growth and turnover," added Paul.

A novel approach at Wigar Pier

At a location made famous by one of the twentieth century's most iconic writers, there is another six storeys taking shape thanks to a novel approach.

Wigan Pier, immortalised by George Orwell’s Road to Wigan Pier, is undergoing a dramatic facelift involving the very latest in iLevel™ Trus Joist® engineered timber floor technology, supplied by Yorkshire-based C R Taylor to sub contractor Shire Timber Structures .

The brand new residential and leisure development, part of a £200 million regeneration of the area around the Leeds Liverpool Canal, will include two hundred apartments, a hotel, theatre and restaurant, as part of a new 'urban village' within the Lancashire town.

The apartments are being constructed using 17500 linear metres of TJI® joists in a variety of sizes with Shire charged with the internal fabrication on behalf of contractor Nuttall Construction.

An additional 4000 linear metres of Parallam® PSL have been installed around the perimeter of each floor in order to provide weight support should a wall panel be removed.

A growing number of new construction projects in the UK are utilising timber frame and engineered floor technology with demand growing at a rapid pace according to Paul Amphlett, Executive Director of Engineered Floor Solutions at C R Taylor. "As an iLevel™ service partner C R Taylor has supplied and designed timber solutions for many innovative construction projects across the UK with this current development in Wigan being one of our largest and most demanding to date.

"There are a myriad of advantages of using a timber framework such as a considerable reduction in construction time, virtually negligible snagging issues and reduced maintenance costs as a result of the 'dry' building approach.

"Increased thermal efficiency and effective sound insulation are other key factors in a development such as this and these systems tick all the boxes in that respect.

"There is also the increasingly vital environmental aspect which is fast becoming a major consideration within all new builds and all iLevel™ timber comes from well managed, certified forests," added Paul.

Mike Onions, Technical Director for Shire Timber Structures, is in full agreement: "This is a common sense solution as one of the biggest issues within any apartment building is the transmission of sound. Engineered timber floors provide the most practical answer.

"We have a good working relationship with C R Taylor and the overall service package for this project was a definite 'best fit'," added Mike.

TJI® Joists and similar engineered timber solutions are increasingly forming the heart of floor systems across the globe and easily fit together to provide a stable and robust framework.
